Xiaomi VR Play | First affordable VR Headset
Xiaomi is venturing into virtual reality for the first time in the best way by going simple and cheap. Xiaomi’s democratizing technology is the thesis behind most of its competitively priced products. The company on 4th August announced the Mi VR Play, an “entry-level” virtual reality headset that can open new exciting medium to their customers.
Xiaomi’s venture into the VR industry may sound good to you. It will be interesting to see how the company, whose primary output is smartphones, continues to develop the technology
This new device will remind you of Google’s affordable and simple Cardboard VR headset. All you need to do is to pop your smartphone into the lycra-built body and open Xiaomi’s Mi VR app. The app contains VR content from selected partners which includes Conde Nast Traveler and YouKu. Xiaomi has pledged to invest $1 billion in video content, including VR, last year, so that library is sure to get bigger over time.
Mi VR Play has significantly improved upon the design typically used in similar VR products. It is wrapped in lightweight with durable Lycra for long-lasting comfort. In future, Mi VR Play will also be available in a selection of bold prints and colors for even more stylish options. The unique two-way zipper helps to ensure compatibility. It is providing a secure grip on a full range of 4.7- to 5.7-inch smartphones. At the same time, the dual openings on the front allow for slight positioning adjustments and ventilation.
Xiaomi is making it available to a limited number of beta test users. Some users have already signed up on August 1 when Xiaomi put out a call for volunteers. Surprisingly one million users signed up in just eight hours, but Xiaomi has selected just a fraction from those volunteers.
Xiaomi also plans to release the headset in a range of bold prints and colors when it becomes widely available, but as of now, there is no fixed schedule.
Here’s how Xiaomi describes the headset:
Mi VR Play has significantly improved upon the design typically used in similar VR products — it is wrapped in lightweight, durable Lycra for long-lasting comfort. In the future, Mi VR Play will also be available in a selection of bold prints and colours for even more stylish options. The unique two-way zipper helps to ensure compatibility, providing a secure grip on a wide range of 4.7 to 5.7 inch smartphones. At the same time, the dual openings on the front allow for slight positioning adjustments and ventilation.
The successful beta test users of the trial program were offered the Mi VR Play will cost just $0.15. Sadly, this low price of $0.15 is not likely to last long, as that’s the special price for beta testers.
Any smartphone between 4.7 – 5.7 inches is compatible with the headset, so you don’t even have to own a Xiaomi phone. The device comes with an accompanying Mi VR app. It is not clear if the app can be downloaded in IOS. This new experiment is likely to bring the VR experience to a much wider audience if the headset is available in the future. Along those lines, it isn’t clear how much the headset will cost once it is on sale to all.
